Day 4...Gairloch to Ullapool, 58 miles, 4255 feet of climbing

For the second day running we awoke to the sound of rain hammering on the windows and a gale howling through any gap it could find....not something to encourage us on our way!!.

And for the second day running, once breakfast was done, the weather gods had smiled on us, and we set off on the day's ride to dry but overcast skies and a strong wind at our backs. An unexpected long climb straight out of Gairloch proved to be the order of the day with pretty much the whole ride being comprised of long climbs followed by long descents....very long descents!!. Excellent reward for the effort expended.

The miles ticked off very easily with the help of the following wind, but this section of the ride provided some problems with locations for any form of sustenance, so 11's, lunch and tea were all taken from our support vehicle...also known as Mike's car!!

As well as our refreshment breaks, the ride was broken up by visits to the Russian Arctic Convoy project at Aultbea (nice collection of artefacts but completely lacking any sort of narrative, structure or organisation) and Carrishalloch Gorge, as well as the countless spectacular viewing points along the way.

A day of sunshine and showers, that ended up as much more sun than rain, with the showers being very short and not very sharp.....our best day's weather yet.

Mike wore his new Ride Director's hat, and Ged stepped forward as unofficial tour photographer. (Unfortunately, only one of these statements is true!!).

Photo's to follow.......

Dave.
